In just about all cases we have encountered, the odour from bad breath is caused by anaerobic bacteria found primarily within the surface of the tongue, between the teeth and to a smaller extent, the back of the throat. Anaerobic means “without oxygen” and these bacteria survive in areas of the mouth where oxygen is not prevalent, i.e. in the surface of your tongue.

Bad Breath can have a contributing factor being poor dental hygiene however people with excellent dental hygiene can still suffer from bad breath. This is due to the amount of bacteria they produce in their mouths

High bacteria production can be caused by not flossing between teeth daily to remove food residues which in turn encourages more bacteria production. Food residues if left will rot and cause odour also.

There is no known reason why some of us are high bacteria producers and others not.

There are in some cases medical reasons for bad breath such as Tonsil Stones, and other conditions. If you are feeling unwell and have bad breath then it may be worthwhile consulting a doctor.
